Private Internet Access VPN Advanced Features Review
- Multi-hop. Multi-hop, when using the desktop application, allows the user to obfuscate the connection. This hides the fact you are even using a VPN. Multi-hop can also be known as VPN chaining. The chain effect is the additional hop from the first server through the second one as another proxy. I point out it’s use through the desktop application because it is not broadcasted on their website. When opening the application, there is a section that you can navigate to and select this option. Selecting this box might prove more secure but inherently limit your bandwidth.
- Split-tunneling. I have sometimes wanted to have different connections with different programs. With split-tunneling, this is entirely possible. You can use specific programs or websites that will not support VPNs. PIA, in a limited capacity with a Windows App, offers App Exclusion. The desktop also features IP bypassing. With these features, I am able to exclude certain applications, while maintaining a solid VPN connection. I will elaborate; there are two connections at the same time. One connection is to the VPN server while another connection is directly to your ISP or open internet connection. This feature does go against the purpose of the VPN, unless using an inverse split-tunnel, so be mindful of what is running on what connection.
- Automatic kill-switch. Your connection may drop from time to time, and you need to be sure that your internet connection is disabled during these moments. With the need to have control or your sensitive or confidential information, you can limit exposure by having an automatic kill-switch. Think of this feature as that underlying, crucial, and passive feature that saves your business. I cannot stress enough the necessity of having an automatic kill-switch. According to PIA, this firewall-based kill switch functionality “provides air-tight leak protection if your VPN connection drops.”
- VPN Encryption. PIA comes with the Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit keys (AES 256). This is the National Security Agency’s (NSA) recommendation for securing classified information, all the way up to the TOP SECRET (that cool looking orange or yellow sticker). There’s no good reason to hand that data over to ISPs, network admins, or IP-based trackers.
